For some families, preparing for the Christmas season begins as early as the day after Thanksgiving. Holiday parties must be organized, gift lists composed, and of course, Christmas light displays constructed. Whether you lean towards minimalist décor or you have a tendency to go all out, outdoor holiday light displays spread the holiday spirit throughout neighborhoods and revolve around wonderful family traditions.

It is important to remember the religious significance of the holiday season; however, this special time of year is also about bringing friends and family together. Families today are being pulled in more and more directions as children move off to college in faraway states and careers take them even farther. Although technologies such as email, Skype and Facebook make distances seem smaller, nothing compares to a family reunion during the holiday season.

No matter the family composition, everyone has his or her own way of honoring the holidays. Of course there is the Christmas tree, which has been a longstanding tradition originating in Europe that was eventually brought over to America by early German settlers. The first Christmas trees would certainly seem primitive in comparison to the New York City Rockefeller display found today. Similarly the rustic beginnings of holiday ornaments has come a long way to the many lights and outdoor Christmas decorations that we see in neighborhoods and in storefronts around us every winter.

For more refined, elegant displays, simple strings of white lights and window candles are common choices. Trees, interiors and exteriors of houses can be transformed even with these modest additions—especially with a reflective layer of white snow. For a more festive Christmas light display, the choices of lights, statues and ornaments are endless. In some communities it has even become a popular pastime to drive or stroll around neighborhoods and observe what others have set up.

Life size Santa Claus statues are sure to enchant children in any community. Most giant Santas are made of fiberglass and are durable enough to last all season through wintery conditions. Different versions include a “Santa With Toy Bag,” a “Santa With Scroll” and a “Sitting Santa” for placement on an accompanying sleigh. You can even add reindeer to complete the picture. More non-traditional yet equally as fun options are the “Climbing Santa,” the “Santa on the Moon” and the “Santa on Motorcycle.”

For more life size outdoor statue decor, you might consider giant Christmas Nutcrackers and life size toy soldiers. Traditionally thought to provide protection and security, these figures would look stately next to entrances and on pathways. Giant “half” Nutcrackers are also available that can be placed flat against a wall either outdoors or in large interiors such as shopping malls. If you live in a warmer region that doesn’t experience the typical “White Christmas,” a life size snowman statue will help you and your children’s imaginations.

Residential homes and commercial establishments alike will attract attention and praise from life size Santa Claus statues, giant Nutcrackers and life size snowmen. When preparing for the upcoming holiday months, consider these options if you are looking for something to spice up your business and family’s Christmas light displays.

Christmas celebration around the world -

Christmas is the most widely celebrated festival, though it is celebrated only on the 25th of December, preparations for the celebration begin well in advance. It is celebrated by Christians and non-Christians alike with equal fervor. With Christianity spread all over the world, the people of each country have imbibed their own cultural tradition and practices into the celebration of Christmas. Christmas celebration have also seen a change because of the changing times and the onset of Technological Age, but despite all of this there are quite a few traditions that have remained the same throughout the years.

Common Christian traditions –

Gifts – Like most festivals, even in Christmas, gifts are given to each other on the day of Christmas, what is different is way the gifts are given. The gifts are placed under the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve that is the 24th of December, believed to have been put there by Santa Claus at night; they are opened the next day.

Christmas Tree – Houses are decorated with green colored Christmas trees. These trees are decorated with different kinds of ornaments, like angel, stars and bell figurines which are hung on their branches, and on top of the tree a big star is placed, as the symbol of the star which appeared in the sky, the night Jesus Christ was born. The tree is then placed in the living room, under which all the gifts are kept.

Santa Claus – Though this tradition of Santa Claus was started by the Americans, it is today celebrated all over the world. It is believed that Santa Claus, on the eve of Christmas, goes from one home to another, delivering gifts to the children who have been good throughout the year. In the U.K. Santa Claus is referred to as Father Christmas.

Christmas Lights and Decorations – During the month of December, homes of people are decked up with beautiful Christmas decorations and lights. Decorations include wreaths, stars, tinsel and baubles of different colors, shapes and sizes. As for the lights, various colored lights of different sizes, are put up inside and outside the house, even on the Christmas tree and are lit at night.

Conclusion –

Christmas truly is an International festival, whose message of Love and Peace spreads across borders and unites the world in celebration, making it a Christmas world.

Nativity scenes are very popular additions to any household in the advent season. They depict the birth of Jesus. Christian nativity scenes normally show Jesus in a manger, Joseph and Mary in a barn, stable, or shed. A mule and an ox usually accompany them. The scene also includes the three wise men, shepherds, angels and the Star of Bethlehem. The traditional scenes that show the shepherds and three wise men together are not true to the story as told in the bible. In the bible the three wise men arrived after the birth of Jesus.

Nativity scenes are displayed in homes, churches and village greens throughout the advent season. Large nativity scenes with live animals and people are created for advent nativity celebrations. Nativity scenes are called creche’s in European countries.

St. Francis of Assisi is credited with making the nativity tradition popular. In a Christmas Eve service in 1223, he staged a simple reenactment of Jesus’ birth, focusing on the manger. He made the nativity come alive. The idea caught on and manger scenes became more elaborate and took on more cultural characteristics from Italy to France, Germany and Spain. Today, almost every culture in the world has their unique representation of the nativity scene.

A typical French Noel crèche consists of figures called Santons. These figures originally made of wood, wax or clay come in their work clothes to visit the Holy Family. They bring the Christ Child presents they have made or grown, hunted or sold. They perform or offer simple gestures of thoughtfulness. They were a way of bringing religion home after the French Revolution. Churches were being sacked and closed. Christmas midnight mass and outdoor nativity scenes were banned. This forced people to set up crèches in their own homes. The displays became more elaborate over time with the whole Provencal village being recreated. Typical characters of day-to-day life: the fishmonger, baker, flower peddler, vegetable merchant, the mayor, priest, nun, midwife with her cradle, the fisherman with his nets and the shepherd with his cape and walking cane are depicted. The scenery is often developed to include trees, rivers, hills, the entire whole village scene with the focal point being the nativity crèche.

Advent festivities in Italy include bagpipers or zampognari who play old hill tunes in anticipation of the coming of Jesus. These bagpipers are popular in Italian nativity scenes. The Italians traditionally view the many elaborate manger scenes on Christmas Eve. Artisans create detailed landscapes around the manger scenes: small trees, lakes, rivers, grottoes, hanging angels and local heroes. The most elaborate and beautiful nativity scenes are set up in Churches.

Nativity scenes are common in Christian homes today, often displayed on mantles or underneath the Christmas tree. Advent wreaths, advent calendars and Christmas wreaths are also popular for advent celebrations.

For most Christians, the scene of the Holy Nativity is one of the most recognizable symbols during the Christmas season. Regardless of the variations, the concept remains the same; Jesus in the manger with the Holy Family at his side. In most cases, an ox and a donkey representing the people of Israel and the Gentiles are present, as well as the Magi, or Three Kings, as they are commonly recognized.
Where did this traditional approach of representing the birth of the Savior originate? It is said the Saint Francis of Assisi introduced three-dimensional nativity scenes upon returning to Italy from a trip to Egypt and Acre in 1220. It is rumored that he used statues and costumed people, however biographer Thomas of Celano noted that St. Francis merely used a straw-filled feeding trough (or manger) placed between a real donkey and ox. It is said that the manger was used as the alter for the Christmas Mass.
This tradition has spread the world over, with many different variations originating in all corners of the globe. In Provence, a town in the Southern Region of France, nativity scenes are made up of hundreds of small clay painted figurines, known as santons, and these represent the many different professions and traditional trades of Provence.
It is a Mexican tradition to build the nativity scene on December 16, which is the first day of Las Posadas, a nine-day celebration lasting until December 24 which is known as known as Noche Buena. Las Posadas is a symbol of the trials Mary and Joseph must have endured before finally finding a place to rest and give birth to Jesus. In select Central American countries, the nativity scene is a progressive build, where the baby Jesus is not added until December 24 and the Three Wise Men are not present until January 6, Three King’s Day.
Today, the nativity scene is displayed in houses, yards, and churches all over the world. One of the most recognized crafters of fine quality nativity pieces is the Fontanini family, who have been in the business for four generations. Other crafters of quality nativity products include Joseph’s Studio, Jim Marvin, Raz Imports, and Roman, Inc.

By: Ellen Bell

If you’ve ever experienced a decorated Christmas tree tipping over, you know just how messy, expensive, and damaging this situation can be. Moreover, an unsteady Christmas tree poses a real safety threat in your home, especially if you have pets or small children. This is why choosing the right stand for your Christmas tree is so very critical.

Millions of Americans display live Christmas trees in their homes each year, and many families never give a second thought to the tree stand they use. They simply pick out a stand at their local tree farm or hardware store, often choosing the least expensive option, and simply assume it will hold the tree without a problem. But the truth is, falling trees cause many fires, personal injuries, and property damage claims every year. Not only do your valuable ornaments break, but woodwork, walls, and flooring are often scratched, and floors and carpets are damaged from water that spills out of the tree’s reservoir. Furthermore, if the tree falls on a pet or child, tragedy can occur. In any case, it’s always a good idea to make sure that you have an appropriately sized tree stand for the Christmas tree you are displaying.

The first consideration when choosing a tree stand is always the height of your tree. Many families are now displaying taller trees than in years past, especially with the popularity of vaulted and elevated ceilings in newer homes. If you will be displaying a tree taller than 9 foot, you should definitely evaluate your stand to be sure it’s designed to do the job.

The next consideration is the size of the tree’s trunk. Obviously, the taller the tree you select, the larger the trunk will be. You want to be sure that the stand you choose has a wide enough neck and water reservoir to accommodate the diameter of your tree’s trunk.

Last, but not least, you also want to consider the size of the tree stand’s water reservoir. How many gallons of water does it hold? Remember that larger trees will drink more water each day, so having a tree stand with a big reservoir is advantageous, because you won’t have to refill it as often. If you already have a tree stand and its reservoir isn’t as big as you’d like it to be, one option is to purchase an automatic Christmas tree waterer. These devices are like an additional, external reservoir that sits beside the stand and funnels water into the tree stand reservoir as needed. The advantage of an automatic watering system is that it can cut back significantly on the frequency of watering the tree.

If you are shopping for tree stands and can’t decide between two models, let material be your guide. Tree stands made of steel are always sturdier and longer lasting than those made of plastic. And when in doubt about the size of tree stand you need, always opt for the larger one. It’s no problem to put a smaller tree into a large tree stand, but you can’t put a large tree into a small stand. A good Christmas tree stand is an investment that you’ll use for many years, so always err on the side of caution and buy one size larger than you think you might need. This way you know you’ll be covered down the road. Remember, having the right size and style of tree stand is more than just a matter of convenience; it’s also a matter of personal safety.

By: Joe Willmeth

The English word wreath comes from the old English word, writhen, meaning to writhe or to twist. Holiday wreaths have long been made by twisting or bending evergreen branches into a circular shape. The ancient Greeks, and Romans, used evergreen leaves and garlands to make headdresses that were awarded as prizes to Olympic athletes, military hero’s, kings and others. Athletes received wreaths of Laurel, military hero’s received wreaths made from olive branches. Members of the aristocracy began adding jewels and precious metals to these headdresses, creating what became the Crown. The word crown comes from the Latin word corona which means wreath or garland. The bible associates wreaths with joy, triumph and honor. In Christianity the holiday wreath represents the circle, and likewise is given as a symbol of eternity. When made of evergreen leaves and branches the wreaths symbolize everlasting life with the green color symbolizing hope and new life. It was somewhere during the 15th century that the wreath began to be used as a hanging decoration. Select this link to see our line of Artificial Christmas Wreaths and Pre-lit Christmas Wreaths. Some believed that hanging a wreath was a sign of victory, be it political, personal or religious.

The History of Christmas Wreaths.

Evergreen plants, such as holly, ivy and pine, which stay green all year, have long been used to create holiday wreaths. Such greens as holly, ivy, and mistletoe have special meaning since they not only stay green, they bear fruit during the harsh winter months. Anciently people symbolized these plants to represent the promise of new or everlasting life. The people of northern Europe and the Romans decorated their homes with evergreen boughs during their winter festivals. Select this link to see our Christmas Wreaths, Garlands, Christmas Greenery and Christmas Ribbon. Sprigs of holly would also be exchanged as tokens of good will for the coming new year. The early Greeks and Romans brought green boughs indoors as a living reminder of nature’s vitality. The Victorian era brought an appreciation for lavish arrangements from greens such as ivy, hemlock, yew, laurel, and bay. Select this link to see our Battery Operated Lights.

A nineteenth century an American custom was to use greens and boughs for wreaths as memorials, honoring the dead at Christmas. The boughs would be woven into wreaths, Christmas stars, and crosses for graves. Later, the boughs would be removed from the cemeteries by family members and brought home, where they continued to symbolize the season as holiday decor.

In the early 1900′s natural Christmas foliage and greens had become less abundant in the countryside. With the introduction of plastic artificial Christmas foliages, Unique Christmas Ribbon and greens we could now make artificial Christmas decorations without endangering nature. Select this link to view our Christmas Trees Artificial. Plastic holly, evergreen, and berries were the most realistic of these early reproductions. By the early 1960′s, new materials such as silk and vinyl opened the door to more life like Christmas Wreaths and decorations. New Christmas Greenery, Christmas Picks and Vases were now available for the Christmas decorators. Select this link to see our Christmas Tree Lights and Outdoor Christmas Decorations. Making the choice of colors and textures limitless.

Holiday Wreaths.

Advent wreaths originated as folk traditions of the people of northern Europe. In the deep of winter candles were lit on circular shaped bundles of evergreen. Both the evergreen and the circular shape symbolized everlasting life. The candle light gave the people comfort at that darkest time of the year, as they looked forward to the warm days of spring. Traditionally an advent wreath consists of four candles, three purple and one rose colored. The three purple candles symbolize hope, peace and love. They were lit on the first, second, and fourth Sundays of Advent. The rose candle, symbolizes joy and was lit on the third Sunday. By the sixteenth century advent wreaths were being made much as we know them today. Check out our wonderful Christmas Decorations Ideas Web Site.

Christmas wreaths are a friendly welcome to all.

Traditional Christmas wreaths are a symbol of faith. Since wreaths are a circle with no beginning or end, they symbolize God’s eternity and mercy during the Christmas season. When Christmas Wreaths are decorated with evergreen leaves and branches they symbolize everlasting life and God’s everlasting love. Their green color is a representation of hope and new life.

If you’ve never shopped for a nativity set for your church, organizatin, or home, you’ll be amazed at the myriad of prices, sizes, and materials from which you can choose. Althought the task can seem overwhelming, it helps to have a basic idea of what’s available and what some of your options are.

The five main factors you’ll want to consider when shoppng for nativity scene figures are your budget, the height of the statues you have in mind, the number of figures you want to buy, the material you’d like them to be made of, and the added cost of shipping charges.

Good quality nativity scene figures are often made of fiberglass, polyresin, wood, or marble-based resin. Depending on your budget, you might want to just buy statues of the holy family or include an assortment of add-ons, such as angels, sheep, shepherds, kings, palm trees, and oxens.

Here are a few examples of what’s on the market.

At the high end of the spectrum is a giant, fiberglass outdoor nativity set consisting of 14 pieces and weighing a total of 854 pounds. The statue of Balthazar stands just over six feet tall and the camel statue is also quite large, measuring 85 inches wide. This Christmas nativity scene also includes other animals, such as sheep, a giant 63 inch donkey, and a 69-inch ox. Other nativity scene figures include the holy family, plus a giant 87-inch angel, a 62-inch statue of Gabriel with a lamb, a 72-inch King Melchior, and a 62-inch King Gaspar. The cost of this type of life-size outdoor nativity scene is about $13,000, and would probably only be considered by large churches or other organizations with a big budget. The nativity scene figures can be purchased separately, however, making it more feasible for smaller organizations to afford these colorful, impressive-looking nativity figures. If that price tag doesn’t make you blink, then you might want to consider a 70-inch hand-crafted Fontanini nativity scene of the holy family. This beautiful hand-crafted depiction of the birth of Jesus is made of marble based resin and weight 170 pounds. Made in Italy, the price is $16,200.

A more moderately priced nativity set is a 12-piece, 53-inch tall fiberglass display weighing 479 pounds. Again, the pieces can be purchased separately, or in smaller groups, so the price can start at about $860 for a 42-inch nativity scene consisting of the just the holy family. One cost factor to consider when ordering very large or heavy nativity scenes is that shipping could potentially increase the cost by 13% to 22%, depending on where in the U.S. you’re located.

Other outdoor nativity scenes include life-size two-dimensional displays, ranging from about $130 for a pair of sheep to around $2,700 for a full 12-figure, water-resistant wood display engineered for outdoor use. In contrast to the fiberglass nativity set, this one only weights a 150 pounds.

An option that is geared for smaller budgets is the 12-piece, 45-inch tall Christmas Nativity set made of polyresin. The full set is around $2,300, but a 3-piece hold family outdoor nativity scene is only about $650.

Christmas nativity scenes can also be purchased for much lower prices, but the potential ‘tradeoff’ may be involve a sacrifice of quality, durability, and craftsmanship.

Christmas Nativity Sets.

Christmas Nativity scene sets are an important part of Christmas decorations. They tell the story of a baby named Jesus, and his miraculous birth. Setting up the Nativity set is often a cherished event in many homes. There are many ways that the Christmas Nativity scene can be set up. The choice is completely up to you and your traditions. Throughout the world there are different customs and traditions when setting up the Nativity scene. Here are a few customs that vary throughout the world.

Setting Your Scene.

There are a few main pieces that are needed when setting up your Nativity set. The manger and crib, along with baby Jesus are at the center of the Nativity scene. Jesus should always be the center of your scene because he is the whole reason for the Nativity. Then Mary and Joseph should be placed on either side of Jesus. Some put Mary next to Jesus with Joseph set away from the crib looking away from Jesus. There is an old man next to him, meant to represent Satan. The reasoning for this set up is to symbolize doubt in human faith. This is not common practice, but has been portrayed in some Nativity sets. Usually an ox or sheep are placed in the manger as well since they were the only other ones present at the time of Jesus’ birth. Now, some people do not place Jesus in the manger until Christmas Eve or Christmas day. This decision is completely up to you.

Additional Nativity Figures.

As for any other Nativity figurines, the shepherds and wise men are usually included. To place the importance of the figures, many people use circles. So Mary, Joseph and Jesus are in the first circle. The shepherds and the kings usually go on the next circle. If you have both shepherds and kings, placing the shepherds closer to Jesus is a more accurate account of Biblical times because the shepherds came before the wise men. One interesting idea I came across was to move the kings slowly across your yard, in an outdoor Nativity set. This shows how the kings slowly made their journey to see the newborn King. Also, not placing the wise men in the scene until January 6th is another tradition that is popular in many Latin communities.

Angels and Nativity Accessories.

One other popular figure is an angel. Placing the angel above the Nativity set is ideal, but if this is not possible, place the angel behind the Holy Family. Placing the angel above the Nativity set signifies the angel looking down from Heaven. With some outdoor Nativities, placing the angel above the manger just is not possible, so behind the scene is good because it shows the angel still looking down on the Holy Family. These are the most popular figures for the Nativity set. How you place them is completely up to you.

Nativity Collectables.

Some people collect Nativity figurines, so they can add a new person each year. Fontanini has a wide variety of characters to add to your Nativity scene. They also have special limited editions every year. These Nativity scenes can be collected over the years and then passed down throughout your family.

Christmas is a magnificent time of the year. As Christmas approaches, one can see numerous traditions flowing in the air. It’s just lovely to observe the preparation and merry making prior to Christmas. All of us desire to have the best Christmas decoration for our home. We want to do something new and unique every year. If you want to adorn your house like you have never done before, decide to do something unique this time around. Unique Christmas ornaments are not that hard to find. Unique Christmas ornaments act like focal points in your decoration scheme.

A lot of people fear to shift to unique Christmas ornaments. They feel such adornments are temporary and can go out of trend. Consequently, people do not want to spend on these as they believe that such ornaments are not reusable. That is completely untrue. Unique Christmas ornaments last for years. These ornaments ensure your affection for years. Unique Christmas ornaments are generally categorized as customized or hand-made. As such vendors come up with same kind of ideas every Christmas. People who are too fond of Christmas ornaments have no other option to put some effort in making these ornaments. Christmas ornaments are mostly used as gifts to friends and family. Therefore, you can get plenty of ideas related to the person you intend to make the ornament for. Customize your ornament with some common memory. If you are presenting your Christmas ornament to your younger sister, personalize it with her nick name. This adds fun to the present. Put some images or pictures. Try to put in all the common memories you share with her. Hand made Christmas ornaments strengthen your relationship with your loved ones. They demonstrate that personal touch with a message, “I care”.

Glass ornaments make beautiful unique Christmas ornaments. Glass spirals or glass balls look stunning on the Christmas tree. These ornaments also scatter lights. Glass ornaments add shine and glitz to the Christmas tree. They are attractive and extremely eye catching. You can also think of making something more natural and eco friendly. Collect some natural shells. Paint them and put some glitters to add shine. Prick the shells to make a little opening. Hang these shells with the help of a string. These look lovely on the Christmas tree. You could take your pet’s paw print on clay and make an ornament out of it. Such ideas cost you nothing. They just require your time, effort and zest.

By: Pre Lit Christmas Trees

Having the economic crisis looming over our heads, more and more people are looking to curb down their expenses and because of this they opt to get prelit artificial Christmas trees instead of authentic Christmas trees. It’s hard to imagine Christmas without displaying a Christmas tree on your home.

Artificial Christmas trees can give you a chance to save up. Instead of using the money to buy a traditional Christmas tree every year, you can just buy an artificial tree, place it in storage by the end of the season and then bring it out by the next year. If stored properly, it will retain its shape and quality. Thus, it gives you the perfect tree for years to come.

However, one disadvantage with traditional trees that homeowners dislike is that real trees can make an absolute mess in your home. One thing that bothers most homeowners is the fact that traditional trees need water in order to remain fresh. This means constantly refilling their water containers. Apart from that, there are the needles. Some of them get embedded in the carpet and can be an absolutely tedious task to clean up. Moreover, there’s the tree sap. This can go into your floor or carpet and can be sticky, and a pain to get rid of.

One, it entails savings on expenses. Using an artificial tree means being able to use it year after year without having to buy a new Christmas tree. Two, having an artificial tree means you are safer from fire hazards. Three, taste and preference is not a problem since you have a variety of trees to choose from. For example, a four foot tree is available as well as a 30 foot tree. Four, the color as well as the tree shape is also varied. Five, artificial trees look just like real Christmas trees. It’s difficult to even tell the difference. Today’s artificial trees are made of high-quality that it’s hard to even tell them apart from the real thing. Details such as color, shape, even the branches are mimicked to the littlest degree.

Pre lit Artificial Christmas Trees

Buying prelit artificial Christmas trees means getting benefits. On the other hand, buying them also means receiving disadvantages. Here are two good reasons for the disadvantages of commercially sold Christmas trees in comparison to real Christmas trees.

First disadvantage with having an artificial tree is that for most people the process of having a traditional tree has become somewhat a tradition. There is no denying that there is an indescribable joy whenever you march out and pick you own tree. People who had strong traditions at home will definitely miss out on this feeling. When you decide to get a traditional tree, you will not get any of these special traditional and feelings. However, you can fix this problem by simply marching up to a tree lot or farm, walk around and feel the surrounding. This will ease your yearning for tradition and will also help you prepare to decorate your own artificial tree once you go home.

Plain tree stands for pre-lit artificial Christmas trees are trouble-free and undemanding to use. Most of the time, the setup won’ give you any problems. They fold into a triangle shape, but when you need to use them, they are usually shaped like an X. A word of caution, however, if you are going to use this tree stand for your artificial tree, make sure to line the bottom with cloth or place it on top of the carpet so that you will not scratch the floor.

Whatever type of tree you’ll settle with, whether its traditional trees or prelit artificial Christmas trees, it is important to remember that you are celebrating the season of sharing and loving.

You will also need to add some Unique Christmas Ornaments to your tree.
